Gills Ladies 1-1 QPR Ladies

Gills Ladies came from behind to earn a point against QPR on Sunday afternoon in a game that they dominated.

Cherelle Albert gave QPR the lead on the stroke of half time with a great strike into the top corner, before Vicky Ashton-Jones slotted home late on to rescue a draw for the Ladies.

Ian Varley was forced into making one change with Sarah Jones injured, Deanna Cooper was returned to the centre of defence after missing last weekend’s game.

The first shot on goal came in the eight minute when Leah Jones raced down the right wing and squared the ball to Danni Farmer; her shot was straight at Lucia Mansella in the QPR goal.

Danielle Carlton was the next Gills player to get a shot on goal as she tried her luck from distance but it went wide.

Just after twenty minutes a ball out from the back found Natalie Crinean in space, she raced into the area before firing into the side netting.

In the 27th minute Danni Farmer was fouled around thirty yards from goal, she picked herself up and dusted herself down and fired her free kick just over the cross bar.

On the half hour mark QPR had their first real sight of the Ladies goal when Kat McKenna let fly from distance but Sarah Quantrill was untroubled in the Gills goal.

Shortly after that Leah Jones broke into the QPR area and went down under the attentions of a QPR defender, but the referee waved away any appeals for a penalty.

The Gills then were a coat of paint away from taking the lead, Deanna Cooper sent a free kick into the area, it fell to Natalie Crinean who lifted the ball over the keeper only to see it come back off the near post.

Just a minute later and Danielle Carlton was once again trying her luck from distance but this time it went over the cross bar.

Laura East then put a shot wide from six yards after a shot from Danielle Carlton found her path in the 43rd minute, but the linesman spared her blushes as he raised his flag for offside.

QPR then hit the Gills with a sucker punch on the stroke of half time, Cherelle Albert picked the ball up outside the area, turned and shot straight into the top corner past Sarah Quantrill.

Half Time 0-1
In the second half the Gills were on the attack from the off having been sent out early during half time. Natalie Crinean played the ball across the box and Danni Farmer’s overhead kick was straight at the keeper.

QPR could have gone two goals clear in the 53rd minute when Seun Odeniyi broke into the area and pulled the trigger, but Gills custodian Sarah Quantrill was equal to the effort.

Centre half Deanna Cooper then went on a run from the half way line and took out two QPR players before firing just wide from distance, as the Gills looked to get on the score sheet.

Just after the hour mark Charlie Nicholson tried her luck from distance for QPR but saw her effort sail over the cross bar.

The Gills had a couple of half chances with twenty minutes of the game left, Danni Farmer fired a free kick straight at the keeper, and Danielle Carlton saw her shot from distance well saved by Lucia Mansella.

In the 76th minute Deanna Cooper made another run from deep through the midfield and fired a shot on goal from distance, again Mansella was equal to her effort.

Then with four minutes of the game left to play the Gills got the goal that their attacking endeavour deserved.

Danielle Carlton played a ball in behind that Vicky Ashton-Jones raced onto and poked home into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

With two minutes left the Gills were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, Natalie Crinean had her shirt pulled as she went to break into the area. Danni Farmer stepped up and fired her shot just over the cross bar.

That is how the game was to finish and the Gills have now lost just once in the last seven games as they continue their run of good form.
